We see this kind of clarity at work in the world today in the rising tide of fundamentalism affecting many of the world's religious communities. Those who claim to have the "fundamentals" operate out of a sense of clarity that says that they are right and everyone else is wrong. Any who choose to question, doubt, or raise another perspective are accused of false belief and are excluded from the community.
The danger for education is that we stop learning. If we already know the truth, if we are already clear about it, we don't need to bother with more knowledge or information. We take what Paulo Freire calls a "banking" approach to education. Our task is simply to "deposit" our clarity in others, and they will be just fine. There is no longer room for doubts and questions, for alternative perspectives through which God might speak a new word to us.
...
False clarity hinders our work of renewing and transforming educational ministry in the church. False clarity is at work when we refuse to look at curriculum materials and resources from a variety of places, insisting instead that only one source of materials is the correct and appropriate one for a church's use. False clarity is at work when we insist that there is only one right way to structure a church school (for example, along age-segregated lines) or only one translation of the Bible that can be used in Bible study.
